Hear from the construction team behind the recently completed Life Time Fitness at One Chicago during a panel discussion showcasing this challenging and diverse tile project. Then, participate in an interactive tour of tile training and certification mockups as we discuss critical points of large format tile, membranes, showers, and other specialties. If you’re inspired to try your hand at installing tile, you’ll have the opportunity to pick up a trowel and participate in guided demonstrations.

 Lunch is included in the program. Wear work clothes if you plan to participate in the hands-on exercises.

Learning objectives

  • Understand ceramic tile general design and installation requirements specified in ANSI A108 Installation Standards for Ceramic Tile, the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Handbook for the Installation of Ceramic, Glass and Stone Tile, and the Advanced Certifications for Tile Installers (ACT).
  • Discuss large-format tile (LFT), gauged porcelain tile (GPT), and GPT panel/slab mockups that demonstrate substrate preparation, preferred layout, required mortar coverage, and allowable lippage mitigated by lippage control systems.
  • Examine the design and installation requirements for wet areas to prevent moisture-related issues: installation of membranes, the location of drains, and submerged applications such as swimming pools and hot tubs.
  • Show the newly completed fitness center case study and how construction coordination delivered an accessibility-compliant project, optimized the construction schedule, and contributed to a serene environment that fosters a sense of well-being.

Scott Conwell-2Scott is a licensed architect and Director of Industry Development with the International Masonry Institute, where he has dedicated nearly 30 years to educating design and construction professionals on best practices in tile, stone, terrazzo, and masonry. He has presented over 1,000 AIA-registered seminars in the US and abroad and is a frequent contributor to many design and tile industry publications. He was awarded the Cesery Award by the Tile Contractors’ Association of America for his service to the tile industry, and he is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) and the Construction Specifications Institute (FCSI).

Jeff has been with Power Construction since 2011, holding positions as Superintendent and Project Engineer. Power Construction is a management-owned commercial construction company that focuses on the greater Chicago metropolitan area. Jeff has a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction from University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Steve Black - elevator hallway - HeadshotSteve is a professional constructor with 30 years of experience in the commercial and industrial construction industries. A LEED BD&C accredited professional, he spent most of his career traveling around the upper Midwest and east coast building high performing buildings in the healthcare and data center markets with McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. For the last 12 years he has been with Power Construction’s Quality Support Department and is currently the Director. While his primary focus is on enclosure and he shares his years of field experience in mechanical and electrical systems with the project teams to ensure that the building performs as designed.

Jimmy Fulton

James has 21 years in the tile trade, working his way from tile finisher to tile setter, and eventually running work for Mr. David’s Flooring International and Diverzify where he ran the tile work at the Life Time Fitness project at One Chicago. James credits his many mentors in the BAC tile trades for teaching him and helping to shape his career. Today he is an organizer and business representative with BAC Local 21 Tile Setters & Finishers.

Mike has been involved in the tile industry for 35 years as a tile finisher, setter, foreman, and superintendent for one of the largest tile contractors in the Chicagoland area. Mike is an ACT certified installer (Advanced Certifications for Tile Installers). While in the field, he oversaw some of the largest projects in the city of Chicago. Mike is currently the lead instructor at the District Council Training Center and is responsible for all apprentice, journey worker upgrades, and ACT training.
