Presentation

Earn up to 3 LUs/HSWs for your participation. (You'll receive 2 LUs/HSWs and 2 certificates from IMI and 1 LU/HSW and a certificate from Custom Building Products).

Join us as we explore the combination of two classic building materials: masonry and tile. We'll provide a brief history of these materials and how they have evolved to meet modern building code requirements and unique design challenges. You’ll learn about the basics of modern masonry wall assemblies, including structural masonry and veneer applications. We'll discuss the units' properties and the mortar, grouts, and accessories used in masonry construction. Additionally, we'll cover the building code and best practice requirements for movement, moisture, and thermal control, as well as the importance of training and qualified labor in the installation process.

In the tile portion of the presentation, you'll learn about the materials and setting methods described in ANSI standards and the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Handbook. You'll examine the unique physical characteristics of ceramic, porcelain, and stone tile, as well as mortar bed and thin-set methods. Learn about the newly-released pre-mixed grout ANSI standards and how pre-mixed grout fits into the overall scope of available grouting materials. Lastly, we'll discuss general workmanship procedures, such as requirements for mortar coverage and substrate flatness, lippage tolerances, the role of qualified labor, and other important field considerations.

We'll tour ceramic tile mock-ups led by BAC’s apprentice instructors and journey level tile installers. You’ll learn design and installation best practices for a range of assemblies, including large format tile, gauged porcelain tile panels, tile shower assemblies, and waterproof membranes. View mockups at various stages from substrate preparation, application of membrane, installation of tile and profile strips, and grouting.
